Sooner than planned...

Well, long story short, best laid plans for an early spring breeding looks like they were dashed sometime last night if my mare takes. I will post pictures of the mare and stud (I own both) when I get some good pictures, and their pedigrees to start a thread for the progress updates soon. Both are registered quarter horses, mare was purchased around 18 months ago as a 7 year old. She is a bay dun, started as a heel horse, now just a pleasure/trail mount. Stud I purchased around 6 months ago, 18 years young, registered as a buckskin, but he is a darker brown base buckskin. He is a former cutting horse, and sorting horse. Currently used to sort and trail ride. I had been tossing the idea around on breeding the 2 because I believe they would make a good cross, but it appears they made the decision for me despite my best efforts as at cross fencing and seperating the two. Here is a link to the studs former owners stud directory. Not the best pictures, but I will get some as I would like to hear opinions on the 2.

I assume both of these horses have been tested for Lethal White and other genetic disorders, right?

No, had not been tested yet as I was debating the breeding. Lethal white would be a very rare occurrence with the lineage and coloring of both (yes I am aware the gene isn't confined), but concerning other genetic defects. No.

Is this the breeding you had planned for this mare or were you planning a spring breeding to a different stud? If it's the latter, I'd lute her and continue as planned.

The breeding would have been to the same stud, I just would have preferred for her to foal around the end of Feb or early March. Hopefully I can get some good shots of both this weekend, and post up for thoughts on the breeding. Both have some faults, but together I think they would pair well. I had never intended to breed her, but I purchased the 18 year old as a previous stud because of his temperment, personality, and I had been debating on whether to geld him this late, or to try and permanently keep seperated, or just breed.

Well for some reason I can't find the registry on that same site for the dam. Registered name is SugarTwilightCommand. I thought they always showed, and could have swore her's showed last time I looked? She is Doc, Poco, Bar bred, but I would like to look a little further back than the papers 4 generations.

Yearling
Very surprised to hear they bred... an October baby will be hard if planning on showing the foal... the foal will always be 10 months behind the other 2013 foals...

Regardless - do you have pics of mare and stud? Babies are always fun :)

I want to get some good pictures up because I would like to hear opinions on the two, maybe I can this weekend. Looks like he may have missed her, because she was still showing in heat yesterday, I seperated them after the incident, and he has not gotten to her again. Maybe he missed the date. I don't plan on showing. If I was doing anything it would be cutting, and that sport is just out of my price range unfortunately because I could get addicted.
