    Stump the color pros!

Ok, I HAD to post this. I was doing my usual enjoyment of seeing what's for sale and what Arabians are looking like nowdays (I must say, I am impressed, it looks like more of a move especially in Egyptians to a more solid looking horse and not such extreme features).

ANYWAY - I stumbled upon this boy. This defies every amount of logic I have about color and we need to get a good debate going about this.

First thing you notice - half a white tail? Whaaaaa? And then it gets weirded - he has been tested HOMOZYGOUS for black...and heterozygous for AGOUTI. Are you confused yet? I am DYING to hear the responses on this one!

Homozygous Black Arabian stallion for sale breeding show halter ms firedevil sire michigan

Based on his pedigree, his sire is MS Firedevil, a Padrons Psyche son who is obviously bay and seems to very blatantly carry the sooty/smutty gene based on his dark patches. His dam is grey with an almost solid grey pedigree so harder to get info from her.

What do you figure? A bay underneath that with extreme sooty? But what about the white tail?

It's called silvertail, and is common in a line of arabs (I don't recall which one) and also found in other lines as well as other breeds.

As for agouti, I'd love to see good photos of him outside. Possible he's brown and such a dark shade he appears black indoors. Probably has "makeup" on the face plus the hairs on the muzzle shaved off, so he might really have brown hairs on the muzzle.

Agreed CheyAut - though I guarantee he's got some sooty going on there. His sire blatantly carries it, and it would make sense for him to be SO dark throughout the body.

NM, I'm an idiot, I knew all about the "Gulastra Plume", I just had a brain fart!

Along with being EE and Aa (or Ata as the case may be) he is also grey (according to his breeder/owner-- haven't checked the Arab database to see how he is registered) which could explain the very dark color and the white in his tail.
