The 'Two for One' Foaling Thread :)

Rose is a Appendix QH, Rose grey in color, and 5 years old. I bought her back in December along with 3 other horses. When I bought her and the two other mares that came with her, I was told the man had had them for at least 3 years and that there was no studs out with them while he had them. Well, obviously he lied because Rose, and the other two mares are pregnant! And all due at about the same time, which is in June. (One of the mares was sold to a very nice older lady a few months ago, and she is going to keep me updated on how her mare, Chancy, is doing.)

Since she was bred before I bought her, and was lied to about it, I have no clue what she may be bred to. If it had been my choice, I wouldn't have bred her at all. I have raised a handful of foals in my time (all from buying the mare and not knowing she was pregnant. How lucky, right? Haha.) and I never wanted to have anymore, but what are you going to do?

I have a feeling she may be bred to a red roan looking jack, because there was one running out in the field with them when I went to go look at them, but I don't know if he was cut or not. So, there is really no telling what we may have in coming our way in June!

So, to start here are a couple pictures over the past few months.

Please note, she is slightly underweight. Remember, we didn't know she was pregnant for sure until just recently, so she has deteriorated some. The vet said she was still in great shape considering, and gave me the 'ok' to continue lightly riding her. Thanks

Personally I wouldn't be riding her at all at this point with the amount of weight she has dropped.

Wow she did loose a noticeable amount of weight from January to March. A pregnant mare does not need all that much more feed than an open mare, but they do need high levels of certain vitamins/minerals. Basically they need to be fed 1.5-2% of their body weight in quality hay as a minimum. You should read http://www.ker.com/library/advances/317.pdf that article from Kentucky Equine Research.

Most concerning though, she appears to have the very pot-bellied parasite look, and her haircoat standing away from her body and looking dry/brittle is another indicator. You should review your parasite management plan for her and get her up to date on vaccines if necessary. No sense throwing money away on feed for the worms to eat.

She is up to date on all her vaccines, and is wormed regularly, switching up the wormers every time so they stay effective. They vet was out just last week and did a thorough look over on her. He did some more blood work, did a palp, and a few other things. He said she looked great, considering we didn't know she was pregnant.

She lost weight because she wasn't getting anything other than her hay every day. Now, she is on a good quality mare and foal feed that they make at the local feed store. The vet gave me the ok to ride her. Keep in mind, we only ride about 15-30 minutes about once, maybe 2 times a week. She doesn't get much real exercise, but it keeps her from getting rusty. So as long as the vet said it's ok, I'm assuming everything is okay. :)

I am really excited to see what I get too! I know it will be harder to train, but I am kinda hoping for a little roan/grey mule. :) But I will be happy with anything as long as it's healthy. But it's like Christmas or something - Wonder what my present will be!

I will make sure to keep everyone posted as she goes along. She has been making a milk bag fairly quickly, so I will try my best to keep up with the boobie shots. ;)

Oh yeah. I would really like to have a little mule foal. :) Considering the colors of the mare and the, who I think is, the daddy I would say it would be a beautiful little mule. But, I won't know until it hits the ground! But it makes it the wait that much more fun, and excruciating! :)

My herd of pygmy goats are all due in June as well, so I am looking forward to upwards of 15 to 20 babies when June rolls around! Haha. I had a couple born just a few days ago. I had just bought the doe and the buck, and 2 days later I find 2 beautiful babies in the corner of the stall. Here they are. They were born on April fools day so the girl is named April and the boy is Fool. :)

Now on to Rose. She is about the same with no real change. She was very moody today, wanting to pin her ears back at me, so no booby shot today. There really isn't any change in it, so you're not missing anything. I did get to see the foal moving around in there though! I tried to get a video but it didn't come out well. Anyways, here she is.

Hi everyone! It has been a while since I updated, so I thought I would send everyone a shout out!

Rose is doing very well. She is still eating good, getting about 5 pounds of mare and foal feed every day in 2, sometimes 3 meals. I have noticed her baby bump as gotten a bit bigger, and she has made some amazing development in her milk bag. The baby has been moving around a lot in the last couple days too!

I am going to let her finish her feed and then I will head out and get some new picture of her. I'll get some pics of her belly, her boobies and I will try to get a hoo haa picture too if she isn't in too bad a mood, lol.
