waxing up

Our mare is a week over due!
Her butt has gotten very soft and her udder is very large. And if you squeeze it milk comes out. She isn't waxing up though!! So we have no clue when she will go.

Does waxing up always have to happen?

Nope! I've only had one mare wax, and it was barely waxed. Of course, mini wax even less often that big horses, so that doesn't help ;)

Foal
Some of mine have never waxed at all, I've even had them foal with a very small udder for it to become huge after foaling, so best just to get your deck chair out and a heap of coffee and sit and watch!!!!

My mare waxed 4 days before she foaled.
She was out in the pasture and had been for about an hour when I went to check her and milk was streaming out.

That is a good indicator. She foaled half an hour after she started leaking. That is a good indicator, but you have to keep a close eye.

Sorry for the double post but has your mare foaled before or is she a maiden?
My mare was a maiden and was 2 weeks overdue. Some maidens keep the baby in longer than experienced mares.

My mare is due VERY soon. She has a big belly and no wax. She has a small udder. I have been told another 3 weeks due to the fact that she is not " bagging up" But, I let that slide by cause not all mares wax!

Yeah this is her first baby so that may be why she is overdue!

Maidens are tough to predict. They don't read the book. Watch for nervousness, and for the nipples to be filled out all the way to the end. Also a loose tail, easy to lift. But then again, you may see no signs. They love to fool you.
