It is just right down the road though. I think they would be able to hear each other...does that matter?

No... I would still say move her. I mean think of it outta sight outta mind. And if the mare doesnt care... she wont really be calling.

I have to agree. I think it would make the transition easier for baby if mom isn't within eyeshot. If the baby can't see her, it is unlikely that she will continue to call for very long.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/

I think another factor in it being hard for the foal is that they were together so long. We wean at 3-4 months, sometimes 5-6 months. I always read that mares milk doesn't really produce many nutrients past 3 months anyway.

yeah we would have done it sooner but when you don't have room and the set up it makes it kind of hard. I didn't have the money to board her somewhere either. This is a huge mess.

Today mama jumped the fence apparently (dent in top of fence). Hopefully that guy will call me back soon so I can take her over. If not I don't know what I am going to do. For now mama is in a secure stall.

This week has really sucked and still has two more days to go... <insert violins> LOL

We don't either, we have 2 acres and 3 separate turn outs, all with just plain old hotwire and T-Posts. Weaning is almost always easier if it's done early on. :)
