I have to agree. I think it would make the transition easier for baby if mom isn't within eyeshot. If the baby can't see her, it is unlikely that she will continue to call for very long.

I think another factor in it being hard for the foal is that they were together so long. We wean at 3-4 months, sometimes 5-6 months. I always read that mares milk doesn't really produce many nutrients past 3 months anyway.
yeah we would have done it sooner but when you don't have room and the set up it makes it kind of hard. i didn't have the money to board her somewhere either. this is a huge mess.
today mama jumped the fence apparently (dent in top of fence). Hopefully that guy will call me back soon so I can take her over. If not I don't know what I am going to do. For now mama is in a secure stall.
This week has really sucked and still has two more days to go... <insert violins> LOL
