Smile What color is out ApHC gelding considered?

This is Regal Joe's Wrangler (aka Shadow). We got him a few months ago and are still waiting on his papers, so we don't know what color he is officially considered. Im thinking some kind of Roan/Blanket? Perhaps grey roan? He looks very brown at points in these pics, but in person he is really dark but with a lot of black/grey. Kinda confusing haha. We are really curious to know...thanks!

Also, not the greatest pics but what do you think of him!? He belongs to my little sister, she bought him outright herself and you wont believe what we paid for him!!! Someone make a guess haha here is some info:

Age: 7yrs
Height: 14.3hh
Weight: 1,150 lbs
Papered
Broke for an intermediate rider (still very spooky on the trail, switched from a hackamore to a bit, so working on neck & direct reining...otherwise he is amazing for being taken off of a 2 yr pasture!)

I'll admit I don't know much about Appaloosas, but I'd maybe guess and say he was a varnish roan with a spotted blanket.... with his reddish-almost black coloring perhaps his base coat color is a dark bay?

He's pretty! I sure wouldn't mind owning him!

Hmm, never even heard of a varnish roan!? That sounds interesting lol I think I will do some research on it. He is not bay at all :/ we asked the vet and even he doesn't know haha.

Green Broke
Looks like a Varnish Bay with blanket. But I'm not sure on the technical wording of that.

LP (the gene that acts as a basic "on/off" switch for Appaloosa color) can do funny things to base color-- usually causing it to look lightened/faded. Before I go check his official color with ApHC, I am going to guess that he is black. ..... probably registered as brown. Maybe registered as blue roan-- possibly black, depending on how much roaning he had when he was registered. If he was really faded when he was registered, he could have been registered as "just" bay, but I don't see clear bay tones in him really.

Now..... going to the ApHC data base to check.....

OK, its Regals Joe Wrangler, he is registered as dark bay or brown, white with spots over loin and hips. I put his pedigree on allbreed--

Regals Joe Wrangler Appaloosa
