When do you think is the earliest time after winter a mare will come into season??

We purchased our maiden mare in May...and was told she was just bred earlier in the month...during her checkup at the beginning of sept...the vet said she thought she was much further along than the four months we thought. My question is...we live in canada..lol so long cold winters...and I've always thought that horses(mares) living outside didnt come into heat during the winter months....so how could she really be that much farther along?? Wouldnt she have had to come into season in feb or march??

Temperature has nothing to do with cycling, it's the amount of light that tells them when to shed and come back into heat. If you put a mare under lights in December and keep them on for 16 hours a day then it would be possible to breed in February or march. Some are still transitional but it's totally possible to get a pregnancy. We have a mare due February 12th at my breeding barn.

Yes Im aware of that...but they were all outside 24/7...it was not a breeding facility....just a stallion in with a mixed herd....

Ohhh! Well mares can ovulate from march through October. Maybe she happened to have a short transition period and was bred on her first cycle.

Thats what the vet said too....this guessing game is not fun...lol the previous owners said there is no way she couldve been bred before may...said the stallion wanted nothing to do with her until then,,,,but kinda makes me wonder....how do they know exactly??? Im sure they werent watching them contsantly...when the vet checked her back in sep...she said that because of the positioning of her uterous..she would put her at least six months...so I guess time will tell...I just hate not knowing....
