My red dun mare had the same thing... and please correct me if I'm wrong but those markings are not brindle striping at all, rather just the markings of a dun.
I think you're right, and it is just part of the 'primitive marking' thing. We call those dun markings on the face 'cobwebbing' out here. My red dun has a little of it, but you can't see it in his winter coat at all.
