Is your mare broodmare quality? *spinoff of gelding thread*

So, 1dog posted a great thread about geldings. It's a thread about if people thought their geldings would have made good stallions. So, being that I have 3 mares, I wanted to do them justice.

Like the other thread, this is not a thread about fighting or debate. Totally open to opinions on YOUR OWN HORSE. Do not critique other people's horses.

Do you think your mare is/would have been broodmare quality? PICS REQUIRED

I'll start (first pic and second pic) I think Demi is going to make a fantastic broodmare with a warmblood or TB stallion. She's uphill, she's got great movement, and she's a very talented jumper. However, her back end leaves something to be desired so I'm looking for stallions that will put a rump on the foal

third & fourth pics- I thought about breeding Uma when I was younger, but now that I know what good conformation looks like, I don't want to breed her. Nor would I want to pass on her temperment (Advanced adult or professional only). She's a bit long in the back and her hock angle is a bit extreme, however she's got a great jump and she's super talented and a sweetheart to handle (not riding)

Your turn!

Oddly enough, I only have one mare. And she is certainly not broodmare quality. Even though I think she has already produced one really nice foal ;), her confo is wonky, her head is hideous, and even though her temperment is great and she is a wonderfully solid working horse, I never want to breed her again. Though I am glad the guy that we rescued her from left her out with a QH stud.

She was still very preggo in this pic.

my mare is a broodmare. and i do think she is of great quality. she was a successful racehorse, and out of great breeding. she has great confo but its hard to tell by the crappy pics. she tore her XYZ ligament so she could no longer race, hence her large ankle in the photo....

these are her 2 fillies she has had so far as yearlings...

My old mare was. She had great breeding, a sweet temperament and decent enough conformation. She would have made a wonderful dressage or hunter horse had she not had so many things working against her. She was overused as a baby and then ended up with a severely injured neck/back/spine from use of a de gouge and draw reins. We had her in foal to Weltmeyer and then she lost it fairly early in the pregnancy when a virus went through the barn.
She's in the main Hanoverian studbook and was branded as a foal.

I honestly don't know. I try to look at Zierra from an unbiased perspective, but it's darn hard! I thought her dam was absolutely hideous, and yet I believe Zierra turned out pretty nice for a backyardish bred Arabian. Despite her minor flaws, she's a phenomonal jumper for an Arab (doesn't display the flat hanging knees style you see so often in the higher headed breeds), and super athletic. She's fast, agile and has a lovely temperment.

I don't believe I would ever classify Zierra as a suitable broodmare of Arabian showhorses, but her stamina, speed and power are things I would love to see passed off in an endurance foal. Perhaps someone can look at her more objectively for me? My main reason in consideration for breeding her is her numerous proven talents and being as I see her as having minor flaws, it's difficult for me to find what I want by way of purchasing an Arabian or Anglo-Arabian around here. Anglo-Arabians are virtually impossible to buy, and there isn't much better around here by way of Arabian broodmares for sale. We have a miniscule Arabian community.

Any comments would be appreciated, I'd like to hear other opinions. As of now, I have an intention of breeding her to Guaranteed Gold for 2011. I think they would compliment each other well, and I would have my Anglo-Arabian.

Thanks guys :) I agree, I much prefer the "sportier" looking Arabs. She's mostly Crabbet bred, which are the thicker and more athletic lines I prefer in Arabs. I know things can change, but it's my full intention to have the foal for life, regardless what it turns out like. The breeding would definately be a one time thing.

In retrospect, I don't think my Paint filly meets my requirements to ever have a foal. Not to mention there are SO many nicely bred Paints available for sale around here, it would just be irresponsible to breed her when I know I can purchase something far nicer then she would likely ever produce. I don't just want a pasture full of foals, I do have a very specific goal in mind when it comes to breeding Zierra.

I believe Classy is breeding worthy :) and I hopefully plan on breeding her in the next couple of years. I would like to breed her to a All around type stallion or maybe even a HUS stallion. I would like a bit more height added she is only 15.1 I would like 16.1hh or around that. She doesn't have any huge major flaws and with the right stallion would make a a wonderful baby one day :)

I always find it fun to look at several generations. I find that this not only shows what is consistent through the line and gives you a very good idea of what to expect but also shows through that if the line and cross are what you want as a breeding animal.

This is one of my other mares.

The filly we have is breeding quality. She's only a yearling (technically, still a weanling until feb.) but, she's won $2200 I think in futurities. Her half brother did equally as well. Her worst quality is her neck (thick, needs lots of sweating), so whatever boyfriend we choose for her, has got to have an awesome neck.

I'd love to get an awesome cremello filly out of her XD

BB TURD!

At a futurity;

I don't know if Piper is. I'm not sure if I'd ever bred her. If I did it would be intentionally selfish in that the foal would be 100% mine. It has always been my intention to breed for a Friesian Sporthorse but I know Piper wouldn't throw a quality cross. However, if she shows the right quality once she is in the ring I may breed her to something that is a bit taller than her (but not too tall). Something with a lot of stuff behind his name.

I think she's a well put together mare and other people that have seen her have said the same thing.

I would love to breed rena. not to sell or anything but for ME :D
i think she is beautiful, pretty good conformation.
BUT what i want to breed her for is her personality, she is a feisty little ****** that WILL try and kick your a** when she meets you, she WILL want to buck you off on your first ride. and when you first meet her you think she is a bad horse, but once she meets you and you earn her trust then she wont leave your side. she will do anythign for you and focus on it. And she is a hrose you can depend on. And she is the smartest Horse i have ever met, when we ride its like having a conversation with her, haha.

I want to say that Zierra is absolutely stunning. I love this pic of her.

An Anglo-Arab is one that is crossed with a TB, right? I think she would cross well. I don't really know what is standard as far as Arab confo but the only thing at all I see about her that is slightly wrong is how straight her back pasterns are. But then again, that could be how she is standing :?. Gorgeous mares everyone.

i plan on breeding my mare down the road. i love her confo & she has a great disposition. im hoping she will do well at shows, shes a total show off so im just guessing she will like it =]

i also really want to breed her because her sire was amazing & he had to be put down this past fall =[ i would love to carry on his line a bit more

I think my little girl is totally cute and would give a great foal for MEEE!!haha:lol:!! I would totally breed her but I am too scared that somehing would go wrong considering she is like three feet tall :-? But when/if I move to the country in a few years I am going to look for the perfect arab, anglo, or tb mare and then when she gets to her late teens I am gonna breed her to an arab or tb so that I can have a peice of her after she dies. Heres my bella, not sure on her confo but I think shes cute anyway:)

Oh I'd use her TripleCrownGirl; She's a really nicely put together mini mare - that's haaaaard to find. I'd find a nice small refined, talented stallion and try it out. The worst thing I see on her is she has a cresty neck - but she looks well fed!! LOL

thanks pantspwn!! Yeah I just got her a couple months ago and we're working on slimming her down. :). just wondering, how mcuh do you think she is worth?? She is definatly NOT for sale-EVER, but I got her free from someone who paid 1200 for her so I was just wondering if eighter of us got a good deal. :-?

I would like to see her slimmed down ALOT before I made a fair judgement on how much she would be worth; right now, she is so obese, that everything about her is out of whack :-( She is cute, but needs to lose alot of weight...

I think Flicka is pretty decently put together; she's uphill built, moves really nice, and has a very sweet temperment. Downside, she's got a smaller rump (thanks to her Walker side), but as I'm working with her, she definitely isn't having issues working off her hindend. I would breed her specifically for my own foal, as she IS grade, so unless the foal was phenominal, and acquired a show record, I know resale wouldn't be a whole lot, especially now a days.

Now Skye...considering she's going through some uglies right now, due to her being a late yearling, I'm not sure how she'll turn out; she's not mine, either, just training her :D However, she is fairly well balanced, although I do not like her neck...short, thick, and she likes to carry it high. We'll see how she matures though in the next year, that may change some. So, possibly yes, but probably wouldn't be bred anyway.

There are some things about Lacey that I'd love to pass on to another generation but there are other things... I love her work ethic and I love her personality (once you get past all her silliness) and I love how athletic she is. I don't love her back or the way her neck/withers tie in together and I don't love how she's not registered. If she were significantly younger I'd probably consider breeding her once, just for me, but since she's not younger, NO WAY! haha If she were younger and I was considering breeding her, first I'd track down her old owner and get her registered, I'd probably choose a high quality Arab stallion (possibly one that was a wee bit more "typey" than Lacey but not too much) with a short back and a nice neck and a good trot since I adore Lacey's trot and I'd hate to see it get diminished. I haven't put too much thought into this since it's never gonna happen but it's sure fun to dream! :D

Here's my girl:

This picture makes her back look so much nastier than it actually is but it's the only recent confo-type shot I have

And the quality attitude shot:

I think my two mares are definitely broodmare quality. In fact, I am breeding Anna in February. I was going to be breeding Penny too but now I am thinking that I should wait a year or so.
Penny is gorgeous IMO and she is so great at cow work and she is getting really good at her sliding stop.
I also think Anna is gorgeous and she also has problems in her back legs so she can only really be lightly ridden anyways.
They both have pretty great conformation. They are also both registered with AQHA and so are the studs we are looking to breed them to. The studs are incredible with cows and very well bred.
Penny is First and Anna is second:
