AHA Registration help

So there is a 8-12 year old mare, supposedly very nice that is going through loose in Billings Sat. They say she can be registered. The owner pretty much went senile and let things get away so she and a bunch of others were never registered. Is there possible way she could get registered without knowing who the dam or sire are? I was told they could through DNA but...

As far as I know, there is no way to register without knowing the parents and having the proper paperwork. The DNA that registries have on file allows the listed parentage to be checked against what is on file for that horse and make sure a new foal can be from the listed parents, but last I knew, registries do not have searchable databases of DNA that can pick unknown parentage out of their entire list, or anything like that. Calling the registry would be the best bet to make sure what they can and can't do, but I doubt the horse would be registerable with nothing at all to go on.

If you COULD find out the names of the horse's parents, I believe you would still have to get signatures of the parents' owners on the registration application-- but again, checking with the registry is always the final word. I would call, as an email might not be returned in time for you to know before the sale.

I have papers to send in for my Arabian, as the owner never got around to registering her either, but they require the signature of the owner of the Dam, at time of breeding, as well as the signature of the owner of the stallion at time of breeding. I would definitely ask the Association itself, and see what they say, because they will definitely be able to give you a better answer.

In order for the AHA to register a horse as a purebred, the dam and sire would have to be on record as being DNA typed from 2002 to the present, or blood typed prior to 2002.

For half Arabians, the purebred parent would fall under the same criteria.

Without knowing who the mare's parents are, the AHA won't register the horse.

IF you could get all that information as well as a signed form from the person who owned the mare's dam at the time of foaling, the price for registering a horse over 2 years old is $375.00.

People saying a horse 'can be registered' usually don't know how hard it is to register the animal. Especially with the AHA, since they have very stringent rules on what they will or won't register.
