Any guesses on the possible breed Jasper is?

I just recently bought a new horse, and I'm pretty excited about it! Jasper is 11 years old, and was originally saved from a kill-pen. I don't know much more about him other than he came from out west and seems to have been a cutting/team penning horse. He has a sweet, sweetmellow nature, but when it's time to work he just wants to go!, He moves in a real flashy way, and seems to flick and extend his feet out at the trot. He's got a walk that looks more like a march, and his canter is all powered from the hind. We know he is part quarterhorse, but he is definitely mixed with something. Any ideas?

That is a really pretty horse. Would be nice if you had a shot of him naked.
If he "flicks" his feet out at the trot, do you mean they kind of float for a second before they go down to the ground. I momemnt of extra suspension? That sound either warmblood or andalusian/lusitano.
There are a fair number of horses of QH plus Andalusian mixing. These are called Azteca. They make wonderful dresage or cow horses. Does he paddle at all? (look at his trot from the front and see if he turns the lower front leg out to the side, kind of rotating outward instead of the straight through "cookie cutter" of a good hunter thoroughbred type.
The way his tail is set kind of low on his butt and its general roundness says Andalusian.
OR, he may just be a really cute QH all the way through.
Another possibility is QH THBD (Appendix QH).
What is his size?
Does he have any natural feathers on his feet ?
Any dorsal striping?

That saddle looks like it might be too narrow for his whithers. It is sitting up kind of high in front which can be a sign of a saddle with a too narrow tree. Mind you, it's very hard to see in the photo, so I could be mistaken on that. Hard to see where his back ends and background starts.
He is a real looker.!

Yes, they definitely seem to float for a second like you describe. He's 15.1. No dorsal striping. I'll have to check on the feathers and the paddling. The saddle is an incorrect fit. The picture is one from his original owner, and you are right, it was too narrow. The woman had said possible Andalusian/QH cross, as well as Arab/QH cross. However, I have an Arab/QH, and they couldn't move or look any different!, lol. I'm going to get some better pictures. I'm happy you suggested the possibility of Azteca, because that is what I'm secretly hoping he is! :)

I thought he looked Spanish before I even read your post. He has a lovely butt on him! I could see him being 1/2 Andalusian, but how a horse like that could ever make it to a kill pen is beyond me!

It really doesn't matter what he is, a good horse is a good horse. And he just so happens to be lovely to look at too.

Oh my, he definitely has the roundest butt I've seen! I think he ended up in the kill pen because he started balking at his job. He avoids collection or contact with the bit, and his owner couldn't really deal with it any longer. My trainer and I think the problem lies elsewhere (possibly with his ill-fitting tack, hard hands, improper seat) so he's in training now with her, and we are trying to get him to a place where he's comfortable and accepting.

I CANNOT believe that horse went to the kill pen! He is breathtaking! Andalusian is what popped into my head as soon as I saw the pic. Either way you DEFINITELY have a pretty boy there!
