We owned the mare and have her paperwork. That's why we thought, our foal, our registration.

I helped a lady in trying to sell her late husbands APHA mares, they were in his name{AQHA works much the same}.Found buyers for the mares but Had to get paper from APHA signed from lawyer to give her signing authority etc before registration papers could be transferred.
Well, now that I have some spare time guess I'd better get to work. Kept his death notice so maybe I can start with that. Probably help too if I can find just one person at AQHA and work with them. If all else fails w can register her as American Sport Horse and cross her with european breeds. Her QH bloodlines are so good, I'd hate to go that route. Thanks for your help!

It sounds like the breeding wasn't released by the stallion own. You say the same man owned the mare and sire prior to your purchase of the mare. The breeding report was filed so that's good, but now the stallion owner needs to release it for registration.

Because he, his wife, and son are deceased, you need an affidavit of heirship filed with a release. The affidavit needs to be signed by the stallion owners heir or you need a different affidavit from the personal representative/ executor of the stallion owner's estate. AQHA will not help you track these people down, but if you provide them names and addresses in writing, they will probably help you with the paperwork.

That's it!! Okay, now I understand what they're looking for. They sent him papers for signature but they were lost or he died prior to signature. Maybe the light at the end of this tunnel isn't a train! Thanks!!!!

Sorry Paint, check CCH's comment. That's what AQHA was telling me was missing, his final sign off on the breeding. I'm going to pull the death info I have, fire up the internet and get our girl's registration started. :)
