Well for one thing they have to be one of my favorite breeds. I always live riding something different because almost every show I've been to all you see is bays, chestnuts, etc. I love riding horses that are so uniquely colored and draw attention.
Secondly, they are so strong willed (aside from the stubbornness of course!) one of the best horses I've ridden was an App mare.

I've met a few Appaloosas. {They} were quirky (which I really love) they could be sweet as pie and then just a challenge in the blink of an eye. They're unique and stunning. I love the striped hooves (my horse has one.) I like the reverse appy markings, especially the ear tips! They were built well and weren't too tall or too small.
The one I rode was very smooth and had a lot of pep.
I've grown up with Appys all my life- my aunt and uncle breed them. They are such sweethearts, with so much personality. And of course, they have such unique colouring!
I love appys. cuz there differnt. you really can never find 2 that are alike. i love there personalities. i learned to ride on my aunts appy and now i own my own. i wouldnt give him up for anything. i love the appy muzzel all those little spots. i know a few people say they dont like them and i say u must admite there very differnt lol
Picture of (Left) hooch the old boy i learned to ride on. i sure miss him he passed away this past year (right) 2 bits My baby
Versatility, hardiness, and personality, although the personality can get under some people's skin when their appytude surfaces. Personally, I like appytude...if I wanted to ride a machine I would go to an amusement park...
I love Appys because the stand out in a crowd.! When i take one to a show they always notice the appy first.! They have amazing personalitys.! They all have a funny character. Always doing something to make you laugh. And are gentle.! I just love the appaloosas.!
I have always thought of Appys as the "guerilla war horse" ; bred to be thinkers who take care of their riders. The ones that still have the single foot gait are even better. I fell in love with the breed after a couple years riding a half Appy named Sun. He was the smoothest ride and when we were on bushy trail, I knew I could point him at a steep hill, drop the reins and he would always find us the best way up. I am not sure where Appys got a bad rap for attitude from some. My old neighbour had a herd of 30 odd head and all were good sound working horses. Posted via Mobile Device

There is actually a lot of truth to that - at least with the original Appys. There was a reason the US government slaughtered most of the original Appys the Indians had...they were faster, had more endurance, had fewer health and hoof problems, and were easier keepers than the horses the cavalry used. In other words, the Appys ran circles around them...
I rode my first appy this past summer and she was amazing! She was so calm and mellow, but at the same time had just enough spunk lol she is one of the few mares I have ever really clicked with.
Makes sense! And if you ride without a saddle, that single foot is as fast as a quarter horse canter without the sway. I remember reading about a Colorado Ranch horse type that is legendary tough and it's a decendent of Appys and two of General Grants stallions, one a barb the other an Arabian amongst other things. I can't recall the breed/type name exactly, but thought it's a horse that I would like to see up close. Posted via Mobile Device
i am an appy fan because, at least ime, they are one of the smartest breeds of horses. easily trainable (provided you teach/show/ask instead of push), quick thinking, great self preservation skills and super amusing attitudes. i know plenty of people who think appys are stupid but i firmly believe that is a case of the horse being smarter than the person.
I had an appy before. He was just a lil spit ball! not mean or anything he had this spunk about him that I loved. And odd habits.. like when he ate oats or grain he'd lift his front leg up and hold it up then switch legs, almost like he was so excited to have it. He was a nice lil sorrel , blanket with spots
I know this is an old thread, but please allow me to tell my story here.
I was never an Appaloosa fan in the past. Sure, I thought their pattens were striking, but I always loved Arabians and bay was my favorite color.
In January of this year, I started volunteering every weekend at a horse rescue. One of the horses there was an 8 month old Appaloosa filly named Jewel. Jewel had been rescued from a kill buyer, beaten bloody, with ringworm and a belly full of parasites. She was terrified of people. But from the moment she and I met, she bonded to me. She would whinny to me and come running in the pasture. I began spending time with her every week at first just groomig and loving on her, and now actively training her.
She is the smartest horse I have ever worked with. So eager to please me. Rarely do I have to correct for the same thing twice. Nothing spooks her. She will walk o tarps and wood without hesitation. She trusts me implicitly. She is very affectionate, loves to lay her head against me and will even go to sleep resting her head on me. She asks for kisses by putting her muzzle to my mouth.
I have never known a horse like Jewel. She is the love of my life. If all goes well, I hope to adopt her in the spring.
papsett - i'm very happy you found jewel and she found you. appys are (ime) a lot smarter than people tend to give them credit for. i hope you keep us updated as your journey together progresses.
Thank you Crimsonsky. She is such a special little girl. I will most definitely keep y'all updated; having never trained a baby before I will be lookig for hints and tips!
I have an appy gelding. And yes he is a goofball and a spit fire when he wants to be. I've had him for years, the best trail horse i could ever ask for. And he's got loads of appytude!!! He gets it from his momma!! LOL He's white now with black speckles he gets in the summer, he's never had a health problem or a hoof problem. One of the most sound and smart horses i've ever owned. He's very affectionate, and loves attention. And yes he will be a dozer on the trails when asked to do so Was raised around them, are my mom's and grandpap's personal favorite breeds, used to raise them, but not any more . One of the best breeds to work with!!!
I have never owned a registered appy, but I currently have an appy cross mare. She is one of the very best horses I have ever owned, and I love her to death. She is a fantastic trail horse. If she likes you, she will literally try her heart out for you, if not, she will try hard to ignore you. But, the appy tail...hmm.
