So I rescued my horse from a crazy lady a couple of years ago. The woman said that He was an Appaloosa, She also said he was 10 (the vet said six) and said that she was feeding him properly, and didn't know why animal control was fining her and going to take her horses away(he was a walking skeleton).
He was solid and had no Appy markings and looked very araby to me. I assumed she had the breed wrong too until he shed out this spring. Now he has little white spots on his neck and butt along with a scattering of white hairs across his back and even over one eye. I swear this horse was solid with no white last year. Is it possible for a solid Appy to get markings as a seven maybe eight year old? What can I expect a different looking horse every year? I'm use to paints that keep the markings they are born with.
He could be roaning out. There is a color(varnish roan) its an appaloosa coat and they slowly get more white on them the older they get. At least I think...
So to answer your question...i dont see why not! heck..i wouldnt be surprised if my girl turned almost all white in the next year or so!!! besides maybe her legs and head!
also...almost all apps will have some sort of modeling around their eyes or nose...does he have any?
Appaloosas also have some special markings only they have. Some of them are the eye color, rectum color, and hoof color. Check the eyes and if they have whites around the iris. The hooves and rectum can be black with white areas.
Could you possibly post some pictures for us? =)
He does have striped hooves, so do my paint and my draft cross though. he doesn't have the white around his iris. He has plain black skin around his eyes and mouth but does appear to have some white and dark spotting in his nether regions. My computer is having issues with pics at this time. I have three pics on my website. The pics are from two years ago. (I need to update) They are dark and he is still thin in them. He looks way better now. He is the second horse. Our Horses
I will see if I can get a good picture of the spots, and get my Hubby to straighten out what is wrong with the computer, so I can post them.
The striped hooves are only one indicator. My appy cross gelding has pure white hooves with no markings on them. He does however have readily visible white sclera, and mottled skin on his nose, around his eyes, and rectum/genitalia.
AARRGH! Its **anus**! The rectum is the passageway INSIDE, connecting the colon to the outside world. The anus is the outside sphincter/closure that actually has skin on it where mottling would be visible/would count as an Appaloosa trait.
LOL.
