Howdy,
We've Been Drafted!

Just got our first Belgian, six months old 8) No name yet, lovin it!

I've been around horses growing up, spent a summer on the Uncle's ranch in Montana as a teen. A fun story about the surprise of my wife's life on Christmas Morn. 8) Do you remember what you wished for every birthday growing up, as you blew out those candles? She does!

it just came true.

OK now what?

 We have Amish dial up service @ 21k, pictures sent to day will be uploaded by next week. :P We live in the boonies, No cable or DSL.

So with all the snow we have, do we walk the cutie on the lead a few times everyday or let her out to run in the field? Does she need a blanket when it gets well below zero? She loves carrots, is there such as thing as too many?

You can let her out in the snow. Just clean her feet of any ice balls she gets. An old trick we used to do when we were young and lived in a snowy area was to pack Crisco in their feet to keep the snow out.

As for a blanket. Well, I only blanket me OLD mare when its brutally cold below 0. She is almost 30 yrs old though.

Does your Belgian have a winter coat? Does she have shelter to get out of the weather? Those are factors in determining if she needs a blanket or not. I mean, it cant hurt to have one on hand though just in case.

I sympathize with your dial up issue. I was on dial up when I lived in the middle of Maryland Farmlands.

As for carrots. I wouldnt over do it. Keep them as treats. I usually shred some up for my horses and put a sprinkle of them on top of their grain.

I built a new barn and have built a stall with in. I still have to build the doors, but I bought a tarp to cover, in case the temps get extreme. The temps here the dead of winter do get down to -35 for weeks at a time. She does have her baby fuzzy coat, although with those pesky dung balls from the breeder. :? We are working at them daily. I think we have too much grain in her at the moment. She was more excited last night than she normally is. Kinda frisky, playful and testing her limits.

Any thoughts on feed? Her breeder feed half a scoop of grains in the am/pm. I was told this was NOT enough. We have a 13% protein grain mix to hold her over until the feed store got in her growth pellets mix. She loved that, and we were feeding her 1 and a half scoops am/pm. Last night gave her the growth feed 14% with high fat content for the first time a 70/30 mix to introduce it. hehe did she let me know that she didn't want that mixed in with her grain. Tossed the mix to the pigs, feed just the grain...and we had a happy horse again. :D SO how much, what kind? She is a six month old Belgian, in great shape.
