So, I'm finally looking into buying my first horse, and although I have a lot of experience and been in the industry for years, I really have no idea what kind of paperwork is involved with buying/owning a horse. I guess what I am wondering is what kind of paperwork to I need for a proper legal transfer of ownership of a horse? I know that if the horse is registered I need to get the Registration papers, I need past vet records and a negative coggins, if I'm traveling over state lines I need a current bill of health, is there any kind of paperwork like a title transfer in cars? Also any helpful tips/hints/recommendations you have for first time horse ownership would be great! Thank you kindly!

Just a bill of sale stating;
Name (registered or not)
Breed
Age
Gender
Height (weight if known)
as well as any identifiable markings
Also leave a space for any agreed terms such as price, date of sale, training & health
Then a space for seller's, buyer's and a witness's name & signature. Witness should be over 18 & not be a relative of either party.
You will also want transfer of ownership forms from the registry (again if registered) that have been signed by the seller, as well as the registration papers. You can usually print these off the internet.
As for traveling, we usually have a minifest that simply states what is being hauled and where, but so long as you have proof of sale that is fine.
