Is she a roan?

We have no clue what she'll turn out like! When she was born she was a dark brown color and has continued to grey out ever since! Shes two years old now.

What are her parents? Does she have an appy parent or a grey parent? Currently it looks like she could either be a grey or she could have a funky appy trait showing up. Both can look similar at cetrain points. Right now I would say she is a grey.

I would like to see a close up of her head/neck. Also does she have a sparse mane/tail?

Usually roans are born roan or roan out when they shed their baby coat. Also they normally change from light when they shed to more roan in summer to much closer to their "base" coat color in winter. My bay roan does that.

So, I'm kind of shooting at the grey gene or possibly appy.

To be roan a horse much have one roan parent, to turn grey they must have one grey parent. Usually the greying begins on the face. Roans do not have roaning on the face.

With the new photos - yup, most definately a grey appy going on. Now the breeder could be right and she could still be "varnish roan" this is different than the classic roan that a poster was talking about up above. Varnish roan is an appy trait and it does progress like the grey gene. But yes - looks like Appy + grey to get that look.

And yes, she could end up looking like mom.

I have to disagree with the "grey" influence comments after seeing the pics and knowing she has appy blood in her veins. Mom is an obvious Varnish Roan.. She is a Varnish Roan.. Yes she will continue to lighten but should keep her varnish points until old age. My appy is a varnish and he still has color on his face and legs. I'd say she got her black basecoat from the Friesian dad. She's very pretty..

Cheno - age 28 or 29 here

Some of that "color" is dirt. His butt is white.

Oh she's gorgeous! She looks like she's doing exactly what my app mare did, she was born pure brown and changed into all the colors she is now (see avatar).

It's called Varnish roan, it's different from regular roan, the giveaway is the lack (or less) of white on the "bony" areas, her hips, sides etc. Varnish roan also affects the face and head, whereas regular roan doesn't. She may also have some snowflaking, but that could just be the varnish. I love Apps and have done a lot of research on the color genetics. There's no telling what she could end up as, she could stay looking like she does now or she could end up almost completely white, she could even get spots!
