I've heard several of you use this term and seen it in horse ads. What is a Grade Horse?

A horse that is not registered.

A horse that can't be registered, either because it's parent's weren't or because it is of mixed breeds.

You are welcome.

But a grade horse can be registerd, just means that they have not been yet.

A grade horse is one who is not registered & whose breed & parents may be unknown. A grade is not a crossbred

A grade CAN be a cross breed (not saying gypsygirl said they CAN'T, but just made it seem like they can't, just wanted to specify!)

A grade horse, to me, is a horse who is either registered or unregistered but their registered name, parents or breed is unknown.

We have a registered Morgan mare, but we don't know her parents or registered name or have her papers, so she'd be considered grade. We have a STB/QH mare, she cannot be registered and we know one of her parents, so she is grade.

Alot of people have different opinions on what a grade horse is, to some it might be a horse that can't be registered, to some it might be a cross breed, etc.

Grade = unknown, basically.

I'm no expert but I believe Gypsygirl is right on this. To my understanding a grade horse is likely or believed to be one breed or physically appears to be one breed, but not eligible for registration do to lineage being unknown or unprovable. A crossbreed isn't a grade, it's just a crossbreed. I know the lineage of my colt, but he isn't eligible to be registered with the ASHA because he is only 3/4 Shire, he has 1/4 Paint. That doesn't make him a grade Shire horse, because I KNOW he isn't purebred. It just makes him a crossbreed.

A crossbred is a cross that is done with purpose, two breeds that will compliment each other to make a 'better' horse so to speak. Where as a grade is usually [not always] bred as a mistake or the parents have unknown breeding. 2 unknowns is not helping out any breed, maybe you will get a nice horse out of it, but its still a grade.

I don't understand why people who know what breed their horse is want to call them grade.
