Horse breed for a small hunter/eq rider???
I am a hunter/equitation rider looking for a new horse after retiring my Appendix gelding. I love my Appendix, he is the loveliest horse, but we did not "fit" each other. He is MASSIVE (nearly 17 hands, very big boned) and I am very tiny (5'5, 102 pounds, but very long legs). But I was willing to look past the fact I looked like an ant on him because he had the sweetest temperament ever and he would've jumped the moon for me if he could. Now that I am looking for a new horse, though, I would like to try to find one with the same temperament but less bulky. I am a hunter/eq rider who shows around 3'-3'3 (sometimes around 3'6 during practice in the ring), but I also like to fox hunt and hack around the countryside. I have ridden/trained many of my trainer's warmbloods such as a few Hanoverians, a Dutch Warmblood, and a Mecklenburg and they have all been lovely, but same issue - many of them are massive and I look so tiny on them. I have recently been showing my trainer's Thoroughbred mare and she "fits" me well (around 15'3, slender build, great little athlete) but like many Thoroughbreds she is very flighty and spooks a lot. I have been riding for a number of years so I can deal with a tricky temperament, but her unpredictable nature makes me very nervous. So basically I am looking for a smaller Warmblood-type horse with a good temperament. I have done some research and I like the Selle Francais and Trekehner and I would be open to some TB crosses as well, but I thought I would see if anyone had any more ideas! Thanks!
