Icelandic horse appropriate for a child?

I would recommend joining the United States Icelandic Congress. You can find local trainers, farms, clinics and a Regional Club you can join. I would strongly recommend taking a lessons from a trainer so you can feel what is like to ride the tolt.

I've ridden the tölt, and I really like it. The more comments I'm reading here, the more I'm thinking that an Icelandic would be really fun for myself, but may not be the best choice for the kids until they have a little more experience and confidence. You never know though - one with just the right mellow demeanor might pop up somewhere.
But the obvious solution seems to be to get a forward one for myself and a mellow one for the kids.

It just occurred to me that since the only horse breed on Iceland is the Icelandic, that means that every beginner Icelandic kid who's learning to ride is riding an Icelandic Horse. If they can do it, my kid can.
But then, they have 80000 horses on an island with 300000 people, so they can kind of pick and choose the calmest, gentlest ones for their kids. I'm sure there's something for everyone with those odds. The pickin's are a little slimmer on the US side of the pond.
