Mare or gelding, your opinions poll.

Between mares and geldings, give pros and cons about them.

It depends more on the temperament of specific horses than the gender. I will say that some mares can be particularly bad when they come into season, while some won't change at all. I have also known geldings that had to be put on hormones.

The only real difference I can think of across almost every other factor is that in my experience, geldings have a better resale value.

I like geldings because usually they have a bit more energy. My favorite though, is the stallion. It is super energetic, they are a bit sassy, and you can sell them for stud.

Just because a horse is a stallion does not mean that they will be anymore energetic than any other horse. Same goes with geldings and mares; I wouldn't say geldings are more energetic than mare And just because a stallion can breed doesn't mean that they should breed. Even the quiet ones should only be owned and trained by someone that has experience and knows what they are doing. They require special care and different facilities.

For your average horse person a mare or a gelding are the best options. For educated, experience and responsible horse owners a top quality, well conformed stallion with and superior show/performance record is a fine choice.

I have always been a gelding person myself, I have only met a few mares that I really clicked with or that clicked with me. Most were older lesson horses, and one was a young arab cross mare, but I have always thought of arabs as being a little more sensitive to people. She was a little crazy when in heat though.

I just love how geldings seem to be the same personality day in and day out, and I like reliability. As the saying goes "tell a gelding, ask a mare."

I'm a mare person all the way!!! I love how they put their whole heart into their work (even if their work consists of being a witch ) And I haven't rode a gelding I really had a deep connection with.
