Theres a new pony at the barn. Not sure what breed he is. My trainer thinks he is a welsh/thoroughbred cross. she also thinks he has some morgan in him. when she got him from the old owner..they said hes a quarter horse.
Is he gaited? Could he be a rocky mountain? He reminds me alot of the old style morgans too. I don't see any QH/TB really. I really do think he looks alot like a rocky mountain horse the more I look into it. Check out the breed IDK much about them.
As simple as I can state it without ruffling feathers, the new "style" Morgan tends to look a little more like an Arab or even more Saddlebred. The "older" style is a little more "round" and less arab looking. I know that's pretty vague, but it's the easiest way to explain it.
I'm a little bit biased too. I own a Canadian horse (the ancestor of the Morgan horse) they're essentially draft morgans - the exact same brain. I worked with many other Morgans, a couple of the old style and one of the new style. They are all fantastic. I love their brains. The one that was the new style was my least favorite IMO, may have just been her but she was much flightier and I felt like I was riding a caterpillar she was so wriggly underneath me - but I'm typically a draft rider :P
They are such fast learners and generally level headed but plenty of fire! My Canadian has the typical high action you'd think of for a Morgan too - awesome breed!
My Canadian:
Some Morgans I found online new and old style (not mine just for reference)
New style Morgans remind me of those fish that look fat from the side - but disappear when you look at them from the front xD They're very narrow

This is off topic, sorry, but PunksTank I'd love to learn more about the Canadian, they are gorgeous! And I totally agree, the "new style" Morgans are not as wide as the foundation Morgans. You should post over in the Morgan thread about them, I've never really known much about them.
Just a note for safety sake - it's very dangerous to lunge a horse with a chain. Chains should be used in conjunction with a normal lead rope (with some exceptions) and not used in activity. The horse's nose is full of nerve endings and especially with increased gait, the chain can rub painfully. If the person lunging has to correct the horse at all, the effect is of course multiplied. If the horse puts its head down or somehow gets away from the handler and steps on the line... yikes.
I don't know why they even make lunge lines with chains. Makes me shudder! (Having said that, some bits do that too..!)
Thank you everyone for your replys. ive attached another picture. This was during his hose off from being lunged. I think in this picture ..he looks like a morgan. But hes not gated.
As far as the old style Morgans, I own one. He is currently 2 1/2 Months old. He is the one in my avatar. He is 98% foundation bred and almost full Lippett morgan. His dam is a pure Lippett and she is definetly not petite. She is very solid and wide. I love the old style Morgans!
my trainer turned out this guy with 2 other ponies yesterday. It was fun watching him meet the ponies for the first time.
Theres a small bay pony and a medium size cream color pony...and when ever the new pony would go near the cream pony...the bay pony would get in the middle and chase him away. :P i guess he didnt want the new guy near his friend. haha
But im guessing everything turned out well. So he will be in that field now.
JustDressage.....that last picture i posted...thats a lead line. hes not being hose with a lunge line.
I read that the horse was being lunged and then hosed off, not that they had changed to a lead with a chain to hose off. But I digress.
Just a note for safety sake - never know when someone will think its a brilliant idea because they saw a picture of it once. Posted via Mobile Device
each pic shows the horse with a stud chain. Why ?
I have never heard that the Canadian horse was the forefathers to Lippett Morgans.
If the previous owner said the horse was a quarter horse, why is it being questioned. Looks quarter to me. Has the right size. Not as heavy as a hind end , but not all quarters are bulldog quarters.
He could be part Morgan . I would say quarter as the old owner stated.
Stevenson - yup Canadians are the ancestors of alot of breeds one source says
" helped to found other North American breeds such as the Morgan, Tennessee Walking Horse, Standardbred, and the American Saddlebred." But I see the resemblance closest to Morgans, Canadians basically look like draftier Morgans xD
I could see the horse in the OP being Morgan QH cross.
Morgan x Thoroughbred maybe? But there is definitely Morgan in there
