Off-Track Standardbreds

I'm curious with your experience on their disposition. I've heard they vary like any horse breed but for the most part are calm and willing partner with "on" switch if they need to go.
I'm an extremely patient person would love to get one some day (the particular rescue I was looking at breaks them into walk/trot/canter before adopting out), but I just don't like high-strung/nervous/too "Forward" horses AT ALL. Which is why my original little girl dream of an OTTB has vanished.
There's just something about race horses... I don't like the race industry, but there's something majestic about horses that have been there.. to me anyways...
Any thoughts?

I grew up on a STB track. While I spent a lot of time around the TBs, there's a special place in my heart for Standardbreds. For the most part, they are very level-headed, calm, and willing. They like to have a job.

Obviously this isn't to say they are all like that, but I think they have a great disposition.

That's what I've heard about them. It just seems too good to be true, you know? Especially because most seem to come off the track around age 3-4. I'm obviously not expecting a perfect bomb-proof children's mount, but yes a calm level headed horse that doesn't bolt off.

Obviously it depends on the horse, but from the ones I met, that's what you generally get. Obviously they are going to have to transistion, but they make really good mounts and are very willing to make the change.
