I had a Tobiano. Loved the horse, HATED that he was always dirty.

He was too green for me, but now that he's with someone more experienced, he's a great horse for them. His nose would sunburn some in the summer so I had to be careful of that. Otherwise, his white never caused him any problems.

I agree. I've never owned a paint, but my whole life I've wanted a black/white tobiano. Overos are not as striking, IMO.

There has been some discussion that there are no Tobianos/Paints in the QH registery, which is so very true. However, most all registered Paints have QH or TB pedigrees. What has happened with the QH and Paint evolution is that the bloodlines of QH/TB that throw excessive white on their offspring are bred back to known excessive white gene carriers. These bloodlines are known as
Homozygous for throwing color/white chrome on to their offspring, thus the color registery known as APHA has it's foundation.

Um what's the difference between a tobiano and an overo? How many patterns are there?

No matter what road I travel, I'm going home and if I'm riding a horse I am halfway there.

The picture in post #11 by ridesapaintedpony is her/a Tobiano Paint. An Overo Paint has solid black, or any color of red from withers to tail dock and under the belly to about the throatlatch with white on both sides with no white crossing over the back in which case would be a Tovero.

This may irk some people, but my problem with paints is not a problem with the paints themselves but with the people breeding them. In so many cases people are breeding only for color. While a horse with a pretty color is awesome, the color is the least important thing about a horse. It doesn't make him a better horse. But you end up with these TWH, QH, draft cross, etc. with paint "chrome" and terrible everything else. Although "chrome" helps in the show ring, unfortunate conformation does not. Everywhere I look these days I see paints. Sometimes they are QH types (which seems pretty traditional), but mostly they are hunters or dressage types (TB or TB/draft cross) bred to be flashy. When I was a kid you didn't see many paints, except in pony breeds. Paints were sought after.
