It pretty much boils down to how the pasterns are, how the shoulder sits, with all parts coming together to give that smooth ride. I would definitely say always take a test drive before buying. You cannot ride the bumpiness out of a horse if the confirmation isn't there.

One important thing is to make sure the horse has good collection, that helps to give the smoothest ride I have found.

My little appy (got to have QH in him, as he looks a lot like one) has got the BUMPIEST trot ever, his lope isn't bad, though.

I started riding some horses for a gal last week, and the gelding is bumpy, too. His lope isn't bad and man he can run... the younger mare is a lot smoother than he is. Have yet to get on the third one.

In comparison my wife's TB has got the world's smoothest trot. I can't NOT post his trot because it's just too dang natural.

It all depends on the horse and how they're built.

I have yet to get on our new Quarter Horse Paint Geldings both 7ish.... But watching them from the ground my horse is more "bumpy" then my bfs horse, who looks like you would be riding on a cloud.
