Hey guys I have a few questions about raising draft size horses. I brought home a 12 year old Percheron mare who was bought at a meat market. The people who bought her thought they could raise a horse, but she hasn't seen a farrier since January and could use a few more pounds. They didn't own a hoofpick and had no clue what to feed a horse. Needless to say she could use some tlc.
Now people have been giving me some insight about feeding drafts, everywhere from half a bale a day to two bales daily. I feed 3rd cutting bales, mostly Timothy, that weigh between 50-60 lbs. I have no problem feeding lots of hay, especially since the weather here in Michigan is below freezing at night. I also have been giving her about a half pound twice a day of equistages by dumor.
Can someone give me a guideline of how much hay/ grain would be a good amount for winter? Also any recommendations on grain would be greatly appreciated. I will post a photo so you can see her condition.
Also, I have had the vet out and a good farrier coming soon for her.
