Paint is a breed - pinto is a coat pattern/color

Exactly what themacpack said, if it isn't registered or eligible to be registered with APHA, it's a pinto.

Paints are registered as paints, sometimes you will look at a horse and say you have a buetiful paint horse but they will say its a pinto because they are not a true paint in order to be a true paint they have to be registerd!!!
