I don't own an Appy of any type, but if I did, I would lean towards the foundation type. I like Appaloosas to look like Appaloosas and Quarter Horses to look like Quarter Horses.

I think it's sad to look through an Appaloosa magazine and see tons of solid horses that look just like Quarter Horses, complete with HYPP bloodlines and very little color.

Now I like Quarter Horses. But why do we want Appaloosas to look like Quarter Horses? If you don't like color then just stick to Quarter Horses instead of changing an entire breed to look like Quarter Horses? There is a similar thing going on with Paints. Tons of solid horses. The Paint Horse Journal looks like the Quarter Horse Journal. And all the halter horses are these huge, beefy HYPP types.

And Arabians, they need not look like Saddlebreds. And Morgans, they need not look like Arabians. And Quarter Horses need not look like Thoroughbreds.

I like breeds more like the way they used to be......before they all started trying to look like one another. I like a an Araby Arab, a Appaloosa-y Appaloosa, a bulldog Quarter Horse, and a chunky Morgan. And Paints and Appies with color. I know solids will crop up, but I swear, there is so much Quarter Horse blood in the Paints and Appies that they are loosing the color. At least the ones in the breed journals seem to be.

Gorgeous! You can't mistake her for anything but an Appaloosa.

I would pee my pants to own a black leopard. But for some reason you don't see too many Appaloosas in Arizona. Not like you do Quarter Horses and Paints. If they were more common I would surely try to own one.

I wasn't looking for an appy at all when I spotted ;) my appyX mare (then a filly). It was love at first sight. If I ever go looking for an appy, I wouldn't look for any specific color or build, I would just look until I felt that same attraction.

I've always been a butt man, so naturally that's what I look for first...

And, of course being an Appy, he has to be able to look halfway intelligent even though he is a total goofball...

Lastly, an Appy isn't any good unless it can give you a good stinkeye...

How cute, FM. I did not realize that your avatar was the stylized rendition of a real photo. Neat.

Stinkeye, is that what you call it?

Yeah, that was done by a very smart and talented young woman that is in vet school now and used to be on this forum.

Yup - the old Appy stinkeye...

I have a small issue with this. Appaloosas should not be breeding strictly for color. My BO breeds Appaloosas and does get some solids. She has a 3 time world champion/silver medallion appy Broodmare that she bred to Choc full of chips and ended up with a solid Bay appaloosa. He's pretty as can be, no color, but he's going to make an SUPER show horse with the potential to go to Worlds.

    Anyways.

Personally I like color too. I bought my first appaloosa because of his color.

I actually sold my 6 year old grade gelding so I could buy my 2nd appaloosa. I bought him because I know some of his siblings, and his dam and he was worth the absolute STEAL of a bargain I got him for. Also, he's got a fabulous pedigree. If I was a breeder I would have kept him intact to see how he showed, he'd have been a good stud prospect (providing he showed well.)

He's 90% foundation bred, but also heavily halter bred. He's only 3 and wasn't properly taken care of as a yearling/two year old so he's still filling out and growing.
