I have never met a mule, so I really no reason not to like them. I personally find them adorable and want one for myself. My friends think I'm crazy because I like them so much.

But I agree: Do not judge a breed by a single member.

I love mules, and want to own one eventually. I've met several, and all were very nice and friendly. They are definitely smart, and very surefooted. I wasn't present, but my friend was showing at a jumping show where someone brought their mule, and the mule beat out all the warmbloods and thoroughbreds.

Mules are either your best friend or a holy terror. There is little in between ground. To be your best friend, they have to be trained right. The terrors among them are usually victims of bad training.

It takes a special person to like mules; they require a world of patience. You have to train a mule like a horse should be trained. No short cuts or unnecessary harshness allowed. You can't force them to do anything.

On the plus side, they are SMART, loyal, calm as cucumbers, safe, and usually great at what they do. They have a different little something about them then a horse that you can either like or hate.

Personally, I like them.

What I don't understand about mules is everyone says they are so calm, but I have boarded with/known people who have mules, and I am not stretching the truth, but 4 out of 6 I have known have been spooky. I don't mean spooking once in a blue moon, like a good horse might, but actually kind of jumpy and spooky. Like you could go out on a trail ride and know that mule would spook with you 2-3 times. My horses aren't that spooky.

So, while I thought they were kind of cool before I actually have known a few, now that I've known a few (and ridden one) I kind of think I will pass on owning a mule. I will never say never, because I also said I would never own another mare, and now I have one that I love, but I would not purposely go out and look for a mule when trail horse shopping.

So I assume people will tell me that is atypical? Because all the stuff you read about mules, even going down in the Grand Canyon and such, tells you they are self preserving and not spooky.

The one I rode, was big, beautiful, and very sweet. But she would spook and either jump sideways or bolt, and I just felt like I couldn't relax and enjoy my ride on her. She was owned by a dear friend that passed away, and I never could tell her I didn't enjoy riding her mule.
