Why is my chestunt ponies mane niether red nor flaxen but a dirty in between grey colour? Is the mane colour affected by genes or does it just simply vary from horse to horse? Sorry for the slightly dumb question

He probably has some sooty counter acting what looks like would normally be a flaxen mane.

So it should of been flaxen but some factor made it go this dirty colour?

Yes. Sooty is what is causing the dirty look.
