RSS, I think what they meant is it's probably related to the same genetic component as sooty coloring, not necessarily to Bend Or...and that any relation to him is likely a simple coincidence.

It doesn't originate from him, no. He is just one of the horses who the spots MAY have been named after. Much like Chubari spots are named after a horse called Chubari, there was a horse with white spots called Birdcatcher, and so on. The other horse Bend Or spots could be named after is a TB called Ben D'Or.
