Is our gelding still considered a paint ? We have seen paints that have much more of two colors. He is beautiful no matter what. I just don't know what to tell people he is.
If he has QH, TB, or Paint (APHA) parents, then he's got plenty of white to qualify for his regular papers. If he's not those breeds or he's not registerable, then he's a pinto, which is color only not a breed.
Paint tends to be a catch all, but technically paint only refers to registered Paint horses. If he's without papers then he is still a pinto, though there is a pinto registry as well, it goes off of colour, not parentage.
No he's not registered. He has been passed around. We are his 3rd home this year. So we have very little info on him. He belongs to our 10 yr old daughter. She just wants to know what he is. Thanks for your help
Any white patterns on a horse aside from "usual" markings is considered a pinto. Registries will list exactly what is needed to qualify but any "spotted" horse is a pinto (not counting the Appaloosa pattern when I say "spotted" lol). Your boy is most definitely spotted even though it's not as dramatic as some.
I would refer to him as an overo Pinto, simply because there is no knowledge of his breeding. As others have mentioned, Paint is a breed and Pinto is a color. To be a Paint, he has to be of proven QH and TB breeding with the qualifying white markings, though some can be registered as solid Paints so long as one or both parents are registered Paint (the other being QH or TB of course)
Whereas Pinto refers to any other breed or mix displaying the proper markings such as arab crosses, gaited breeds, drafts, ponies, etc.
Your gelding could be registered as a Pinto without any knowledge of his parents due to the white on his belly and neck, however the Paint horse association would no accept him without proof of breeding.
Ie: all paints are pintos but not all pintos are paints
Yup, he does have Pinto markings, just not very loud. If he were registered as a Paint, he would probably qualify for regular Paint papers vs. breeding stock. Like Drafty said, he looks like he is frame overo.
