hoof markings?

Okay so my little paint/mustang gelding, has brown marks around his hoofs they arent big about 1 inch around and in his white markings, I was wondering what they are called and why horses get them?

So I have no pictures right now but I can get some tomorrow.

More than likely they are ermine spots. Some horses have them, some don't. All it means is you horse has a white suppressing gene that is fighting with the gene that put the white on him.
