Tobiano/Tovero

Well, for those of you who read my other thread about whether the paint stallion at the time now gelding was a tobiano or tovero I was waiting to hear information back from the breeding farm. Well, I finally did! Turns out his Sire was a Tobiano who passed away in 2009. His dam is a sorrel AQHA. They no longer have the mare either they sold he last year the woman said.I now have his foal date as 4/22/2008 so he is coming up on 4 years. They actually asked me if I would be interested in selling him back to them since they lost his sire. But, when I told them I intended to keep him and that I had him gelded they didn't want him anymore. They are going to send me some paperwork so I can get him reg. In and they said they are very interested in knowing about the foals that are produced out of my mares from him. So he would register as a Tobiano or a Tovero according to the APHA?

Congrats on getting the papers in order. I would say to register him as a tobiano. Nobody that I know registers tovero unless they are a VERY type-y tovero.

APHA will more than likely register him as a tovero.

Just FYI APHA can change what you put him down as if they don't agree when looking at his pictures.

I've never had color like this to work with...do you think he will produce colors? Also now I'm wondering how to work his name to reg. The previous owner called him voodoo...but his sire is Lines Qton Ranger and dam is Two Eyed Charmer.

It's 50/50 if he will pass his tobiano on or not.

At least on our tovero's (sorry) certificate, it is listed this way...

Pattern Type TOB/OVR

Her sire was tobiano, dam overo.

...and I think the APHA will consider the OPs horse a tovero considering the patten and head white, too.

No need to be sorry. the term tovero just happens to be a pet peeve of mine and Chiilaa's. It's irritating due to the fact it means tobiano + some other overo type gene. Too many people think that toveros and tobianos (and solids!) Can't possibly be carrying frame which is so very, very wrong. The registries are horrid about being informed on color genetics.
