I just bought a 2 year old red roan mare. She is a great granddaughter of peptoboonsmal and a granddaughter of peptos stylish oak. Her sire is peptos pretty pep and he is a red roan. Just wondering what color she may turn into. Her dam is a sorrel
Pretty much. It may change a little over the years but she will always be red roan. Some are darker than others but you will have to wait until summer to see how she sheds
Hmm.... while I agree with the other posters I was always under the assumption that "red roan" was bay + roan, while chestnut + roan (what the mare is) is "strawberry roan". I always see red roan used interchangeably and don't like it lol.
Bay + roan is bay roan. That's it. Red roan and strawberry roan both refer to red base + roan. It's more commonly seen with strawberry roan referring to light sorrel roans, particularly those with flaxen manes and tails.
Shrug, not how I'm familiar with it but thanks for the clarification. Don't know why we need so many different terms for the same thing! lol I like to stick with "bay roan" "black roan" "chestnut roan" they are more factual haha.
Yeah I was wondering about her turning grey, but I think the red gene is more dominant. Correct me if I'm wrong because I do not know a lot about colors and genetics.
