What color would you consider him?

I have always called him dun, but I wasn't sure what kind of dun, or whatever. The difference between the different duns and buckskins is kinda confusing to me so just wondering what you people think. :)

It's simply a different gene. Dun is bay + dun and buckskin is bay + cream. You could have a buckskin with dun (often called a dunskin) which is a bay + dun + cream. They are basically a more faded out version of dun.

The differences are that in a buckskin the coat color is diluted. A dun the coat color is diluted as well (not usually as much as a buckskin) and they also have primitive markings. I can't see the dorsel stripe strip on your boy, that's the most defining characteristic, but I can see the zebra striping as well as the very distinctive shoulder barring (cool, a lot of horses don't have that!), I'm going to assume you're going to tell me "yes he has a dorsal stripe" now ;). Another characteristic is a "mask" on the face. Basically dorsal +/- a bunch of primitive markings.

This link has some good pics: Buckskin And Dun Are Not The Same Thing | The Equinest.

Not all dun's are obvious looking but ALL have the dorsal stripe. To be confusing other colors can also have the dorsal stripe but it's simply "counter shading" and more primitive markings as opposed to the effect of a specific gene and the markings are usually very faint. You can see from the link that a dorsal stripe is NOT faint and is clear cut.

Your boy is dun, he is light enough he might also have the cream gene but I doubt it. You can test if you want. He's SUPER cute btw!! :) LOVE the second pic!

Now as far as "different types of duns" there aren't. There is only one dun. The different names you see are simply the base color + dun to determine exactly what the horse is.

So grullo=black + dun (doesn't follow the rules though you COULD say "black dun" though you may get strange looks), bay dun= self explanatory- usually just called "dun", red dun= chestnut+dun. Etc.

Any strange colors follow the rules "palomino dun" for ex. The exception being "dunskin" though again "buckskin dun" is perfectly acceptable as well. It's mostly just lingo so not anything to worry too much about, aside from grullo pretty much any color is "color + dun". Heck you could have a dunskin roan pintaloosa! It sounds crazy but it's just a matter of breaking it down into understandable pieces.

Yes, he does have a dorsal stripe ;)

One of my favorite parts of him are his little Pikachu ears (second pic) ;D and his zebra stripes on his legs (first pic)

Thanks, this helped. =)

The third pic has a bit of his dorsal stripe in it... sorry about the bad quality.

^Oh so give the article credit and not me? (joking, joking!! :))

OP-knew it lol. As I said a lot of horses just have the dorsal and not much else so love how it's displayed on him, it's nice to see the other markings and his color is very very nice, plus he's absolutely gorgeous which doesn't hurt, love the white face.
