I was pretty sure he was just a chestnut roan, obviously frame, and I think sabino? But, that last picture is of his tail, ad theres a fair amount of black/grey. Color gurus..... any thoughts?

Red based frame, sabino and probably splash. Not seeing roan. The dark hair in the tail is normal.

Analisa, sabino causes roaning and it is common for horses to have random white hairs speckled through out their coat. A real Roan horse will change colors dramatically with the seasons. A red roan would turn turn almost pinkish to almost white and maintain red legs and head. You do not need a close up picture to tell if a horse is roan, you can tell from accross a field. My hypothesis for your boy is that it is caused by one of my first two guesses.

That explains it much better mellissaann, thank you for giving me an actual explanation. That would explain annies odd "roaning" too. I had her with a true bay roan for about a yr, and while she did get a little lighter in the winter, the bay had a much more drastic change. So, the both of them would just be chestnut with frame, sabino, and splash?

Chestnut with frame, sabino, and splash is my best guess! Very cute!
