This is my mare Annie. She's a Quarter Horse cross, around 14 years old I think. I've had her for around four years, I traded my first horse for her. She is super sweet with people, but doesn't like other horses much.

Anyways, I just want to know what you guys think of her conformation.
Also, how would you describe her face marking? It's not solid white, and it's fainter in the summer than in winter.

Some of the photos are from the summer I bought her, some are from today. And I know in one of them her hack is too low. I know. I borrowed it from the barn, and I fixed it before I rode her.

Boy she sure changes from winter to summer! She has a bit of a thick, cresty neck and looks like a very easy keeper. May be prone to getting fat in the blink of an eye but I like her overall hardiness. Looks like she could be a fun horse to try all kinds of things with!

She stands over a good bit of ground but she is very useful looking and sturdy. She needs to lose weight and looks a bit insulin resistant. I would increase her work and decrease her feed.. lots and lots of hills and trotting up those hills.

Her cannons are a little bit light but not too bad.

I find her feet very deep at the heel and her toes excessively long and "dubbed." I think her feet need quite a lot of attention and she may be a horse that needs to have her feet done every 5 weeks instead of every 6 weeks.

Yeah, she is a super easy keeper, she gets fat so quick! She was out with 30 other horses on a 900 acre ranch, so her diet was definitely not monitored, haha. But I moved her closer to home a couple of weeks ago, and we have a decent set-up now where I can ride nearly every day.

What kind of work do you guys recommend for getting her into shape? Trotting up and down hills for her hind-end? What about topline and neck?

The first four pictures were taken two days ago, number five was in 2012, and the last two were in 2014.

What do you mean by "dubbed" Elana? Her shoes came off in fall, and I am not sure if she's had a farrier since then or not.. (our situation is somewhat complicated right now).

"Dubbed" is running the raps around the outside of the edge of the hoof rounding it off instead of cutting hoof wall from below to property form the hoof as a unit.

Your situation may be difficult right now, but without proper attention to your horses feet, you will end up with lameness that can be a LOT more money than a farrier coming regularly.

Trotting up hills on a loose rein and you standing in the stirrups will develop the horse's hind quarters and stomach muscles that will support the top line and allow it to build up. It is also a great work out for horses over weight...
