I might have the chance to buy this foal and save him from slaughter, he is cowhocked, but what else can you tell me, based on these pics, about his conformation, and how severely is he cow hocked?
Will it cause him any lameness or will he be unable to do certain things in the future? If I don't buy him, he will be sold to the meat buyers on monday, and I am still working things out, but I don't want to buy him if his conformation is going to be a problem.
Ohhhh...
He is sooo cute! I like his head, A LOT.
He has a nice short back, but it's hard to tell his shoulder but that may be nice. His hind leg with the sock seems off... Has a nice hiney!
Do his legs rub together when he walks? Is he swinging them funny to compensate?
He may or may not have problems, I've seen some that were bad do fine on trails forever...
Thanks for the reply. The owner wants him gone, doesn't care where he goes and has made arrangements for him to go to the meat buyers on monday if not sold this weekend. Says she cannot afford his board anymore.
I am not sure how he walks. If I go there this weekend to see him, I will check it out. It is nice to know he does have some good features!
Seen worse. Will probably make a serviceable gelding. He toes out behind and looks normal behind (horses have to toe out behind.. the ind leg is a spiral). Down hill and his neck comes out of his chest low. Needs his feet done. Looks like he will be a very pretty color. Got good hind quarters.
Thanks! Will corrective trimming help with his cow hocks? I would get his feet done when our farrier comes out in March... that would give me time to work with his feet also.
In order to get him, I need to confirm a place to keep him, and I need to plan a trip to see him. I really like him, as I think he would make a good trail/ranch horse, maybe even a good kids horse in time, and I just don't agree with foals going to slaughter...
I am not so against older, unusable lame horses going there, as I know they need to make money (feel bad for saying that) but with horses that have potential, or their lives have just begun, I just hate and if I could, would save them all! But I know I can't, so that is why I really want to save just one!
He looks worth saving to me! He will likely get wider behind as he matures and builds more muscle in his hind legs. I have seen much worse legs. Neck ties in low, but for a general pleasure horse that's not the end of the world. His face is cute and color is pretty. He looks worth the gamble to me.
He needs to just be trimmed nice and level. Let him grown and keep on his feet every 4 weeks and he will be what he will be. I do not believe in corrective shoes or trims. Level and keep on top of it most grow straight. If they do not, they would not anyway.
You will go get him and bring him to your barn and name him Gamble and give him loves and kisses and attention and then you will keep him forever and always
The name is up for discussion though, no worries
I am not able to make it for Monday, and she does not want to miss the chance to get rid of him... to no matter the person. I feel REALLY bad, but I am unable to save him. He will be headed to his death tomorrow...
She wanted him gone ASAP, and sadly the meat buyers were the first to get out there. I just wish I could have made it out sooner.
