So I was interested in this 2 year old filly, but I only have this one picture of her. I sent the picture to two of my favorite horse people that have owned horses for years, and they both said they didn't like her. One said they didn't like her hip and neck, but how can you tell from this picture what she really looks like? I will not take any offense to anything anyone says. I just want to understand why they don't like her, a real good reason besides "I don't like the way she looks". What seems to be the problem with her? I plan to train her to be a ranch/trail horse... (she was cutting bred) I can't fault anything except one thing, but it might be a fault in my eyes because of the angle this picture is at. What I really want to know is if anyone on here can really SEE, from this one picture, what they don't like about this filly with a good backup reason. It's driving me crazy. I was wanting to see her this weekend. She's APHA registered. I will be starting her, training her, and selling her. (I'm considering starting horses on the side in the future. At the moment, I just do not want the responsibility of other peoples' horses, so I'm taking them on myself, starting, training, and selling for the experience)
IMO, it's kind of unfair to be conformation critiquing a 2 year old. If they look underdeveloped, they have many many more years to grow into those weird spots. Hows her parents conformation?
Unless you are doing competitive ranch, timed trail, working eq, ect then I don't really think conformation would matter UNLESS you plan on breeding or it's so bad that she has physical issues because of it and she definitely is not horrible looking if you are looking for a leisure ride. If she has the disposition for those disciplines, then why worry about that unless it would affect her performance?
that's the fault I saw and to me she looks a little thin. That's all I can tell from this picture. How much will that affect her? I don't know enough about the structure of a horse. I know basics what's desired and what's not, but I don't know the WHYS certain things are undesired.
I actually REALLY like what I see in that photo. It just yells "ranch horse" to me. My 2yo was WAY uglier than that and in only 10 months turned into a bulldog.
If it were me that photo would warrant a visit to see her. Love her expression and face.
If you are buying her from pictures, insist on decent conformation shots.
I won't even try to critique her, based on those photos.
You need a side shot, where she is standing square tot he camera, thus neither front or back angled closer, as in that picture
Front shot, rear shot, all with horse standing square
Her neck appears to tie in low, but won't make that call off of that picture
The only things I can really see are the front pasterns which, unless you're going to be working her very hard, shouldn't make a whole lot of difference for a "weekend warrior trail mount" kind of horse and her ears. Ears is a pet peeve of mine, I don't like long ears on anything but the donkey they belong on. I would pass just on those ears and never make it past that.
I don't see anything out of the ordinary from that picture. But then again, she's not standing square. Not sure what they were talking about but she's only 2, so she could fill in more and change.
I think you should go for it and check her out. Think she'd be fine as a ranch horse.
That photo is not critique worthy, but those long pasterns and the low tie in of her neck are noticeable and will affect her abilities to perform and stay sound, depending on how hard she's work and the discipline. A 2 yo is too often at that awkward stage to really judge conformation fairly--if you like what see in the photo, it's worth taking a look at her.
Thank you for everyone's input. I see a lot of you notice the same things. That really helps! Thank you for everyone's input. If there is anything else anyone notices/wants to say please do!! I still have another couple day to think about it
