Thanks so much for this! I too get really annoyed when people use netspeak, it makes if very difficult to read. Now if we could only get everybody to use proper sentence structure, and punctuations we would be all set. I find a huge run on sentence with no punctuation just as frustrating to read as net speak.

I would like to say I really dislike this rule and here's why also its not that I frequent the text chat I don't want to get in trouble every time I say thnx for being polite. Its like the ettiquette group they are making a conscious self effort to be polite, if someone wants to make a conscious effort to not use net speak all the power to them but trying to control how others type? I have encountered this on a few other forums and the ruling goes if you don't like it, don't read it.

    A) Its not like name calling or harming anyone its just people that don't want to read it.

B)It takes the same amount of effort to not read a post with that type of writing as it does to write like that (no one is forcing anyone to read those posts).

    C) If we're going to start calling spelling why not punctuation, grammar, sentence fragments, capitalization, or all the political correctness rules (ex. No saying Merry Christmas) etc..

    D) there is a list being created of what is acceptable and what isnt so text speak will still be around

Okay rant over, whatever is decided no guarantee ill like it but I'll try my best to follow it.

It's not about spelling nazi, it's about respecting members enough to type in a legible manner. You wouldn't turn in a paragraph with no puncuation or al text speak to a boss or teacher, why not show the same respect here?

It's hard to read with old eyes XP

.. Or even young ones! Either way, it's just plain... I dunno. I quickly lose my respect for someone who can't just type two extra letters to say "you". "@" is harder to type than "at", personally :P

Just because someone's not forcing me to read a post dosen't mean I don't want to read it!

I guess it's just a personal preference. But I really and truly think that we are creatures of habit; once one starts typing incorrectely, one will start writing like that and eventually talking. Practice makes permanent ;)

Also, those who usually write in all text speak may either start a thread or post in another thread and have a real issue or information that is really worthwhile and helpful but no one wants to help or read their post because it is "al run 2gather lik ths w/ no punct or ful wrds or sent structure"

Not all of us grew up with text/net speak and for some of us, it takes longer trying to find out what it is supposed to say than it would for the poster to type in a manner that all could read. I really like to read all the posts and get everyone's input on a thread that I am interested in. For people to use net speak not only isolates themselves from the rest of us but also isolates us from possibly giving them help or responses to posts/threads that they want to join.

I agree with this post. Obviously I will be following the rules as I always have, but that does not mean they seem correct to me. A lot of people have issues to work on; I have counted at least 7 different posts in this thread alone with grammar and/or spelling errors in them. I have seen people in this thread use the word 'nazi' like a casual meaningless term. However, I still read what they write because little details like this are irrelevant to what they are trying to present. A cry for help, whether it be worded as "please help me" or "guyz please help me!?!?!?" should be answered. I would hate to see someone's voice not heard because others do not like how they type. Rather than demand others improve themselves and punish their mistakes, we should look within ourselves to improve our own flaws concerning any issue.
