Abused horse trying to revive his coat

Its a little too cold to bathe him yet. I'm hoping one of these days the weather will warm up, but until then...

I recently acquired this horse that someone had been abusing/starving. I've been getting some weight back on him and working on brushing him, very gently as he is sore (you don't even want to know the whole story), but his hair coat is very long, curly and matted in several places. I tried rubbing oils and even cowboy magic into the matted parts to loosen them, with no luck. I don't really want him losing anymore hair then he already has and you know that when it gets matted like that it hurts and can leave more sores. Any suggestions? I trimmed the ones I could, but right now he is very restless because his hips are in bad shape so he won't just stand in one place so you can trim his hair.

How long has it been since he has been wormed? Remember, a good coat condition comes from the inside, if he is suffereing from a worm burden, his coat will be dull and long.

He is wormed regularly. Also he is being fed foal starter recommended by my vet to put weight on which is working wonderfully. And sandclear because he has a belly full of sand. His coat is shedding out and starting to look good, but he already has so many bald spots from wounds that were left untreated and matted hair that pulled out.

^^I don't think so...My horse's coat was curly but it was because his winter coat was so long and matted and disgusting from the lack of nutrition. He also had rain rot very very badly- his whole shoulder was almost completely bald. It just takes time for all that to come out, and putting the MTG will make it come out easier, and leave behind a shiny and smooth coat with the proper nutrition and grooming.
