Sometimes greys can be born chestnut, mine was. When she started to grey, I didn't know what to register her as. Still, funny story, and he obviously hadn't been cleaned in a long time if she hadn't noticed the change.

He was 15 when she bought him and he was registered at 10. The old owner was stupid. He was also left in a field to rot for a few years but the old owner was not a good horse person.

It was really fun to watch my friend try to explain to the registry people how the horse had changed color so late in life.

My girl is a dapple gray, but I have a picture of her when she was four and she was a chestnut color.
