I have a paint who i have had since July.Well when I bought him the previous owner had cut his mane short because she said that right in the center it was already short so she cut the rest to match and let it grow back out evenly. So lately his mane has started to grow quite well.Where it was 2 inches when I got him it is now 6 but guess what..The center is not growing.I don't think it was a matter of when she got him he had been cut in the center due to a mat or something I think its due to the fact that it wont grow there. Is this something that is common if so will it ever start to grow or should I just pull his mane to make everything look right..I love long manes but his just looks trashy but I really don't want to pull it if that part will grown at some point.

Your paint sounds a lot like one of my geldings looked like last winter--he rubbed a portion of his beautiful mane off. I tried to cut it all to a uniform length, and we're still trying to get it looking decent. Almost there, but not quite.

It might help to shampoo your horse's mane and rinse it out well. Trying to keep the longer stuff brushed, clean, and braided will help to encourage more growth.
