Bath time?

How old should your goal be when you give him his first bath?Casper is 5 days old and I want to start introducing him to water, but I'm not sure if I should give him a full bath yet.

I would wait until he's at least 4 weeks old to even hose him down. And a few months old to actually bathe the little guy.. he needs to spend time with his mother.

Personally I wouldn't bathe him at all, until he was around 6 months.. but that's just my preference.

Alright thank you, I just want to introduce it to him early so he's not skiddish of it later on.I know many horses that are very hard to give baths to because they're afraid of the water.

Very true, you can get him used to it when you fill the tanks outside. Had a few youngsters messing around with the hose. Then it's kind of a "we check it out in our own time" thing and it's a lot less stressful.

Don't go off of my advice alone, though. I've only been around so many foals. There are more experienced members on the forum than I.

I think that sounds like a good idea, having him come up to the hose on his own choosing.

Him and his mom are still out in a pasture with 24 other untrained horses, but I'm getting them to my house away from the other horses this weekend. I'm excited.

I'd give the little guy time to trust you before you start dousing him with water. Give him 6 months or so to let him get used to you and I'd make sure it was warm water. I don't like to overwhelm babies right out of the gate. I like them to get used to me and spend time with momma learning the ins and outs of being a horse.

Thank you, I just got my mare Montana home and sprayed her with the hose for the first time, she actually loves water. She kept turning her hindquarters wanting me to spray her there, I was surprised how well she did because she's quite a stubborn horse. (:

Still haven't got the baby home yet, going to get him today.

Glad Montana liked her bath. Some horses take right to it. Post a pic of that baby when he gets home :)
