Ok so my horse wont tie in a wash rack. I've tried and he pulls back til his lead snaps. On a really hot day, he'll stand and eat grass while I spray him but I can never shampoo him cause he'll walk off since I can't tie him. How do you teach a horse not to panic? He did get caught up in one when he was younger so im thinking this is why he acts up but he just refuses to stand still in a wash rack. How can I reboost his confidence in one of these?
If its the actual spraying of the water that he is afraid of try putting it on low pressure and starting from his front legs, that way he can see whats going on and realize that its not a big snake coming to eat him! I think the feeding is a good idea as well and he'll just take some time to really adjust
Do you have someone that could hold him for you? Gem is terrified of water and has actually stretched out his halter when I tried hosing him off once. Now whenever he needs a bath or to be hosed off either I or Tom holds him while the other one hoses off.
Does Dude have a friend that likes the water? Maybe try bringing him there and just hose off his friend. If he sees his friend just standing there, it might make him feel more comfortable.
Does he allow you to get him wet with a bucket of water and a sponge?
We have a wash rack now but I used to do a first bath on a horse with just me holding the lead rope and slowly start wetting the legs then the chest and so on down the body. If the horse wanted to move away I let her, just kept the spray on them. When they stand still for more than 10-15 sec. Take the spray away and praise her. Plan on getting very wet and watch out you don't trip on the hose. Do it just like you would any training session. As if the water was a rope that you are desensitizing them to.
Ok to answer all your questions guys:
Yes I've had someone hold him and he like runs backward and drags them around so I can't exactly do that. I can do a bucket and soap but how do I rinse the soap off of him? He's watched me wash on off his buddies, but still no. Its just getting really hot out and I want to have a day to just bond and bathe him but he wont let me unless he's really tired and hot from riding. The hose is short so its not like its this long snake coming at him. I could maybe get a longer hose and work with him in the round pen but that would be a muddy mess...idk if the BO would appreciate that.
