Body clipping?

I plan to compete early in the year next show season, so to get my horse looking his best, I plan to body clip him.

We live in Michigan, and he lives outside. I am thinking that I'll put a stable sheet under his turnout blanket, and put a hood on him. Is this a good idea?

Also, when should I do it? I'm thinking I'll do it in February, do you think I should do it closer to March?

Any opinions on this?

I would never put a hood on a horse while they are outside. I don't think they are safe.

Also, will that be warm enough? It does not sound like you are putting many rugs on him, unless your turnout blanket is quite warm. Remember, you are getting rid of his natural insulation, and in March it may still be very cold for him, especially after having a winter coat.

To give you an idea, my horse will have a blanket liner, nylon sheet, and a heavyweight blanket with a winter sleazy (polar fleece lined) and he'll be inside all winter. I'm in SW OH. I would advise looking at turnout blanket systems that have layering options specifically for cold weather.

If you're going to full clip him at that time of year and it's still cold you should be double rugging.. or using another turnout rug system which will still keep him warm
