so my Horse has Bot eggs on her legs and i need to know how to get them off cause i have no idea- and i dont want to buy something... can anybody help! PLEASE!
Bot knifes are super cheap... I'm like, the cheapest person on this thread and even I got one  Most stores that have a couple horse grooming items (Its Hudsons here) will have a cheap little bot knife and if you take care of it you likely won't need a new one for a very long time Plus it's only a couple dollars, mine was 3 or 4... can't remember, I've had it for three years
Edit: PLUS, getting the bots off now with a cheap little knife, is much cheaper than having to de-infest your horse from bot /larvae/ *shudder*
bot eggs are nasty little teeny tiny yellow eggs that are usally on your horses legs and arnt easy to get off- like you cant just brush them off. and if your horses eat them they could give them worms!!!! =( anyways- you should really read about them ....it is VERY inmportant that you do.!!!!! learn about them because you will need to know about them if your horse ever does get them!
ok- i think i will get a bot knife=) didnt know they were so cheap=) but i read on a website that if you use a razor (like the ones you use to shave your legs=) and gentley scrape their legs...the bot eggs come right off! so im going to go try it and if it doesnt work i will just get a bot knife=) thanks everybody!
If you don't have a bot knife you can use a serrated steak knife or butter knife. If you put a little baby oil on them and let it sit for a couple minutes they come off easier.
1. Bot Knives aren't created equal. Oddly enough the cheaper and better ones are found at Tractor Supply.
1.1 Bot Knives are one-sided, they aren't like a steak knife that has a double-serated edge. If the bot eggs aren't coming off, try turning the bot knife over to the other side.
2. If there's a lot of bot eggs wet them in WARM water and quickly remove them. They will come off easier because the warm moisture tricks them into thinking the horse is licking them.
That's why bot eggs don't come off in the cold rain.
2.1 If I find just a few, I keep children's rounded two inch scissors at the barn and will chop off the hairs with the eggs on them. Not at all pretty but it's winter hair and grows back quickly.
3. Then there's the throat bot eggs that self-migrate into the horse's mouth but that's a "whole nuther critter" and might be TMI until everyone reads the above link
Erm, if you dont want to buy anything, you could get a rag and some warm/hot water (not hot enough to burn the horses legs of course) and wipe his legs off, then kind of pick/scrape the remaining ones off with your fingers, or even a razor for your legs or whatever.
See, when you use the warm water, the eggs release. Because, when the horse licks the eggs, their warmish saliva gets on the bot eggs, and they release to go and be a pain in the butt in the horses body.
So, warm water and a rag will make them easier to brush/pick/razor/wash off/get them off in general.
A bot knife works better, but warm water does work also.
My horse has bot eggs too =( makes me itch just thinking about it. and the supply store here doesnt sell bot knives or those slick n easy blocks so now I'm stuck waiting for it through the mail
I now know what my next purchase will be at the tack store! :P A bot knife! My previous horse had them the whole summer and it was ew. I was kind of puzzled but now I know and I hate these little bugs!
i use a disposable razor cheap works great and disposable.
One thing to always remember never remove the bot eggs anyplace that you feed your horse OR any place that he might inadvertently be grazing. the eggs can last forever (weoo a really long time) and you don't want to go the trouble to remove them only to have your horse eat the grass where you were de-botting him and get them anyway!
Would a pummice stone work as well as a grooming block or grilling stone?
You know, those things for getting rough dry skin off that you keep in the bathroom? Can buy them at the grocery/discount store/dollar store.
