So I was wondering. How to braid a horses mane and tail. Mane for shows, so I don't have to cut my QHs mane it would look weird short, he would be used in trail and halter if I do show him. Also for tails just to keep them clean from mud, so I can get them long and not caked with mud and clay.
I'm assuming you're showing him english?
If so, look up "Arabian Braids" these are mostly accepted in english shows.
IF you can french braid, you can do this.
If you can't french braid, look up that, and practice on someone elses hair, or your horse's tail.
Arabian braid
For his tail, to keep it clean, just get it clean first, just by brushing or whatever your method of choice may be, braid it just from the tail bone down and put it in a tail bag.

I find this one so easy that I am able to do it even without the ability to french braid! The only downside is that it slips out pretty easily.
What about this? http://i51.tinypic.com/15hm4h.jpg
Typically for western you want it 4/6 inches, and then you put one band up top, but I completley understand you don't want to cut your horses mane, I can't bring myself to do it.
Yea that's what I was thinking. I think my horses would look funny with short a mane. Plus my QH is very wide in the front and muscular to me with a short mane hed just look plain weird.
If I could upload pictures I would but it doesnt let me :/
French braids don't come out easily and they aren't as hard as they sound.. I learned in 5 minutes with a you tube video with a girl doing her own hair. Exhibitor Labs : French Braiding The Long Mane is how it's done on a horse.
