I bet that would be fun to do on a Frisian! Or a really fat pony, just because they would look adorable.

I always do my braids right after I wash them. Best advice I can give is to keep the hair wet. While its wet, just start at the forelock and bring it back into a French braid as tight as possible. Also, you can sew in the loose ends with some fishing line if the horse has some pieces that stick out, usually if you pull the line real tight it will help to keep the braid in firmly.
